Roadblocks to Writing

Ever feel that way while writing? You scream on the inside for help because creativity is not flowing. Or you want to write but you procrastinate by checking your email first or you hop on Facebook for a quick sec. Only to realize you've chewed up all your writing time by NOT WRITING.

There are many roadblocks. Each of us may experience different blocks: distraction, procrastination, emptiness, to name a few. My thought is that the evil one wants to do everything in his power to keep us from using the God-given gifts that we have. You may not think that writing is very important - it's just a "hobby" or something wanted to do but chalked it up to a childhood dream. However the desire to write, to express yourself, still exists no matter how hard you try to ignore it. Well, don't ignore it. Pay close attention to that desire - it's a desire placed in you by God. Embrace it, Trust Him. And write.

But roadblocks will still come. How do you move past them? This is the topic at Pages for the month of February, "Roadblocks to Writing." I hope you will consider joining us every Wednesday in Feb (2/1, 2/8, 2/15, 2/22, and 2/29). We meet in the large conference room at LWCC, room 112 from 6:30-8PM. Bring your notebook and writing utensil. Laptops are alright too, as long as they are on "mute." There's nothing like a quiet writing time interrupted with a loud "ding!" notifying everyone in the room that you just got mail. :0)

This is one of my favorites by John O'Donohue. It leaves me speechless and even breathless. Life is crazy. We may find ourselves standing in that "doorway" of a new beginning at different times in life. Standing on the stoop scared to leave the tired familiar "comfortable" place yet, not courageous enough to take the first step out into the energized unfamiliar risk - the new beginning God has for you. All I know is that we must trust Him. As the line says, "You can trust the promise of this opening; Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning that is at one with your life's desire." We desire to trust Him. We move slowly. Our courage builds. A verse that comes to mind is: "Wait patiently for the Lord, be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord." Maybe you are waiting for the door of a new beginning. Maybe you've been waiting for years. Or maybe you know the door is right in front of you, yet you are timid and unsure. Be brave and courageous. The Lord to guide your next step, just ask Him to walk with you, closely.

Does Mr. O'Donohue's poem (blessing) speak to the "out-of-the-way places of your heart"? If so, don't dismiss it - take time and sit before God and offer that feeling up to Him. Ask Him to reveal your new beginning and listen closely for His voice and encouragement.

First Writers' Retreat

Infuse[d] Arts hosted its first Writers' Retreat on Saturday, January 14 from 8:00 am - 12 pm. Nineteen writers attended the "two-in-one" retreat: work on a writing project or meet with others in a more structured, prompt-driven, intimate group. I'd say it was about 50/50.

The connecting time as a whole group was inspiring. The project people shared what they are working on which lead to great conversation. The group writers' time was powerful and we saw God moving in big ways around that large table.

In my next post, I'll feature the video I showed to kick off the morning. It's a thing of beauty and many people shared that it really touched them deeply. It was just a really sweet sweet morning.

The biggest request I saw from the evaluations is the desire for a full day retreat. A close second was "can we have a retreat each month?" At this point, the retreats will be every other month (I'll looking for a date in March) and it will be a full day. So be prepared for lots of inspiration, connecting with other writers, big chunks of time to write and times to share. We learn so much from one another.

The desire you have in your heart to write is a desire placed there by God Himself. It's easy to listen to the all the negative "voices" that say you can't write, you shouldn't write, who's going to read your stuff, what you want to write has been written about a thousand times before. But if you quiet yourself before your Creator, Father God, He will surely tell you that He has given you a one-of-a-kind voice, a unique style, and a passion to communicate something of importance. Listen for His still small voice of encouragement, of love, and inspiration. May His voice be the prominent voice you hear as you continue your journey as a writer in this life.

Being Remade

Tonight's "show and tell" at the Open Studio was beyond words. We had about 17 people share their canvases from November @ The Studio's IMAGO DEI workshop. Some people completed all three canvases others one or two. The three canvases are The Obvious Me, The Hidden Me, and the Created Me. Hearing each person explain their prayer-filled canvases with such vulnerability and honesty was incredible. We were on holy ground.

I know there are about 17 more who participated in Nov @ The Studio but their schedule didn't allow them to attend this evening. I can bet that many of them were also deeply touched by God's presence while working on their three canvases. I felt so privileged to hear how He is moving in people's lives as they expressed themselves through their mixed-media artwork.

God is at work in incredible ways. Art reveals, it transforms, and it heals... when we invite Him into our creative process through prayer.

In April 2012, we'll have a full exhibit at Living Word featuring our Imago Dei canvases. The walls will be filled with visual stories of Jesus' transforming love. April is the perfect month for this display as we humbly move into Good Friday's message of Jesus' passion beyond imagination - we are forgiven. The celebration that the empty tomb brings is that we are being transformed more and more into Imago Dei, the Image of God.

We are being remade. We have the chance to become the person that God created us to be. Thank you, Lord.

Thank you again for the artists and creatives who participated tonight. I hope to hear the stories of those of you who couldn't attend. Maybe we'll do another "show and tell" to give others a chance to share how they experienced God's love and truth through this workshop.

We have completed the month long theme of Imago Dei at The Studio. Three self portraits were created by each person: The Obvious Me, The Hidden Me, and the Created Me. It was a very fruitful exercise and many were touched by the creative process that was steeped in prayer.

I Played My Best for Him

Yes, it's only December 1st and I'll be honest, I began listening to Christas music on Thanksgiving. Christmas music has really been speaking to me. Lyrics I've heard over and over have become mute to my ears and heart. Sure I sing along merrily, but I rarely take in the rich lyrics as I have in recent years. However, God really captured my emotions when the familiar song, "Little Drummer Boy" came on my Pandora Christmas Radio Songs station. I've always dismissed the song, only hearing the prominent "pa rum pum pum pum" segments. But this time, I really listened the lyrics. Actually they went straight to my heart. I'd like to share them with you, minus the "pa rum pum pum pum's."
Come they told me,
A new born King to see,
Our finest gifts we bring,
To lay before the King.

So to honor Him,
When we come.

Little baby,
I am a poor boy too,
I have no gift to bring,
That's fit to give the King.

Shall I play for you
On my drum?

Mary nodded,
The ox and lamb kept time,
I played my drum for Him,
I played my best for Him.

Then He smiled at me,
Me and my drum.

At The Studio in December of 2009, I passed out these lyrics to everyone. We read through them quietly and shared anything that stood out. Some stated that they never took note of the lyrics before and really liked them. Others made mention of certain parts of the song, "I have no gift to bring, that's fit for the King." One mentioned the fact that the animals kept time - which brought up a neat thought about how nature participated.

There isn't a line in this song that doesn't speak to me. I can relate to the little drummer boy, as I believe all artists/writers can. I am a poor boy (girl, actually), with no gifts to bring, fit to give a King (Jesus). But all He wants is for us to show up and play our best for Him (or paint our best for Him, draw our best for Him, write our best for Him, or create our best for Him).
Then He smiled at me, me and my drum (or canvas, writing piece, etc.)

As we head into the busy Christmas season, remember the words of the "Little Drummer Boy." It has a deep spiritual message for each of us. Often we judge our "best" by how the world reacts to our artwork. But God doesn't see it that way. As an offering for Him, He only expects we show up and do our very best.

Then He smiles at you, you and your art...

Book Binding ~ January @ The Studio

We'll have lots of options for your cover and interior pages.

January @ The Studio will be mostly an instruction based workshop. We will make a 5"x8" bound book that can be used as a visual prayer journal, a writing journal, a photo album, or a gift for someone. Artist Melody Martin will be our instructor.

The cost for this workshop is $10 and you must register here. There are limited spaces and the deadline to register is December 21. This is so we can purchase the materials and have them prepared for you on the first day of the workshop.

December @ Pages

“Developing a Writer’s life” will continue at Pages in December for two Wednesdays, 12/7 and 12/14 from 6:30-8:00PM. Then off for the rest of the month due to holidays. Yes, only two Pages gathering but they will be awesomely JAM PACKED with great stuff.

DECEMBER 7 @ PAGES: We’ll be talking about our individual God-given purpose as writers and we’ll use the homework assignment we gave in October as a jumping off spot. It was “What book is inside you?” So if you haven’t sat down to work on that, you may want to before 12/7. :0) Bring your writing notebook and pen/pencil. We meet in the large conferece room at LWCC.

DECEMBER 14 @ PAGES: Published author, speaker, and life coach Georgia Shaffer will be joining us. She has an amazing story about her call from God to be a writer, much to her dismay (and you'll find out why). You really don’t want to miss her very encouraging story! This Pages evening we’ll meet in the coffee bar rooms A & B. (Enter the church via the coffee bar doors. Turn LEFT and head down the open hall way and the room will be on your right. A Time to Retreat

My life is busy. I work full-time in ministry, have a curious and busy toddler, a son in college, another son in the 11th grade, a gracious husband, bills to pay, groceries to buy, and a house to keep somewhat clean. Sometimes my soul can feel completely depleted. Don't get me wrong, often my kids and my husband are very good for my soul...but to be honest, being pulled in so many different directions can wear a person out.

I know you can relate.

God has wired me to need times of solitude. Before my baby girl was born (19 months ago) I was in a rhythm of going on a silent creative retreat one night every other month. These retreats recharged my soul and reinvigorated my relationship with Jesus which in turn, inspired massive amounts of creativity in me. Silence and solitude was a very crucial spiritual practice for me. Dare I say, it also benefited my family and anyone else who came into contact with me... my soul felt a deep rest due to my retreat rhythm.

Last weekend was my first retreat since October 2009 and let me tell you, I was way past due! Even on the drive to the retreat center I could feel relaxation pour over me. Then when I stepped through the door of my room, I nearly burst into tears out of pure relief and an almost audible "Glad you are here to spend time with Me, just the two of us."

There are two beautiful ponds on the retreat property. One of which I spent lots of time at (pictured above). The other one was home to two huge swans and from what I hear, you don't want them angry at you. So I stayed clear!

I hiked on never-ending trails for nearly three hours Saturday afternoon, I took photos along the way and was in a constant open dialog with God. I remembered what freedom feels like. I even had the sense that God missed me the past two years - missed this intentional time together.

I looked alone, but I didn't feel alone. He was and is beside me.

Many times in His life, Jesus retreated from the hustle and bustle of the crowds and the demand of life to be in solitude with His Father, the One who sustained Him in ministry and in death. When I feel "guilty" for my desire of a silent retreat, (like I'm selfish or care less about my family) I just remember the example that Jesus set before us. Yes, throughout my daily walk, I know He's there...sometimes I'm just not very present to Him because life distracts me. He gets but little chunks of my day. But one thing I heard loud and clear last weekend while in His extended presence is that since He's wired me to need solitude, I must be intentional about getting back on track with my silent creative retreats. Every other month would be delightful and that is what I'm aiming for, once again.

To slow down means you see beauty in unexpected places. To be silent means you are more apt to hear Jesus' voice.To retreat means to fully engage your heart with God's.

May you find time to retreat, even if it's once a year. Your soul will thank you. And you'll make God's heart smile in a special way too.

@ The Studio Last Night

As you can see we were a very busy and creative group at The Studio last night. We worked on our first of three mixed media self-portraits, "The Obvious Me."

There were over 40 creatives and artists creating in the context of community. It was beyond awesome. Worship tunes filled our ears along with friendly chatter, God was in the room. Many onlookers wondered what we were up too, questioned and stated how cool it was to see so many people working side by side on such a personal project.

Next week we will create our second self-portrait, "The Hidden Me." Yes, we dig a little deeper into this facet of ourselves. Click here to get the handout prep-work for The Hidden Me project.

The Studio will not meet on Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday, 11/23. However, we'll conclude our series of three self-portraits on Wednesday, 11/30, with "The Beloved Me."

The Obvious Me

The Studio last night was very inspiring. Doug Puller gave us many examples of mixed media artwork and then followed up by teaching us different techniques. I finished up with an explanation of our first of three mixed media self portraits that we'll create this month at The Studio.

The first project is The Obvious Me, the "me" that everyone sees. What are the obvious things about you? If a friend were asked to sum you up in 5 points, what would they be? I passed out a worksheet as a way to begin reflecting on who is the me that the world sees. You can access a copy of that worksheet by clicking The Obvious Me link above.

On November 9 at The Studio - I'll have a canvas panel for you and lots of art supplies. You can begin your self portrait using your reflection worksheet as a launching point. If you have items from home that represent the obvious you, feel free to bring them and incorporate them into your piece.

The cost of this workshop is $8 which helps to cover the costs of the three canvas panels and art supplies.

Time to Write ~ Pages Tonight

Pages - Creating a Space to Write

Wow - a whole room dedicated to reading and writing!

Having a comfortable place to create, whether you are a visual artist or writer, is quite important. But it can also hold you back from fully using your gifts. What I mean by this is, I'll use me for example and the abuse, I have a small house - filled to the brim with life. There is literally no "extra" bedroom or general space to set up a quaint writing studio or arts studio. I too often allow that reason to keep me from writing or creating art. Sometimes I feel I need a dedicated creative space in order to create. But if I'm really honest with myself, that is a cop-out attitude. It's laziness. It's a lack of trust in my gifts. It's a reason to procrastinate. "I'd like write more, but I just don't have a space that makes me feel inspired."

Inspiration is necessary to create. And spaces can certainly be inspiring or uninspiring. The images below appeal to me as inspiring places to create. However, even having a nice place to write doesn't change my heart. I need to want to write. How badly do I want it? Will I write only if I have a spiffy place to do it? Or will I be creative with the space I actually have. My house. My little humble home... will I choose to look at my spaces differently and see possibility instead of frustration.

I'm pretty sure we'll never be financially set to afford a writer's or artist's shed on a melancholy beach overlooking the grey seas in Nova Scotia. Or have an English country backyard with vines and ivy growing over tall wooden fences like a secret garden. So, I must look again at home on Main Street, ask God for inspiration to create a lovely space with what I have and then ask Him for more inspiration to do the hard part - writing.

Yes, what I am saying is that I often use the excuse of not having a space to create to justify why I don't create. Oh, I feel the conviction right now settling in on my heart. I sense God saying to me, "Use your gifts where you are." Okay Lord. You are right. But it would be lovely to have one of the spaces in the images below. :0)

Well, it's raining again...surprise surprise. The weather is not cooperating with us. We have work to and the rain (mud, really) is holding us back.

Good things come to those who wait. We must wait one more week to officially open the Sacred Path & Prayer Gardens at Living Word Community Church.

Pray for a week of dry weather! :0)

Official Opening for Sacred Path

After years of dreaming, months of planning, and weeks of installation, the Sacred Path and Prayer Gardens officially opens on Sunday, October 16, 2011 on the property of Living Word Community Church.

Come, rest and be still before the Lord. This rustic, half-mile mulch path meanders peacefully around the front perimeter of Living Word's property, weaving in-and-out of pine and maple trees and along fields of corn. There are five beautifully landscaped prayer gardens along this path, each having a sign post featuring a thoughtful quote or scripture for reflection and contemplation. Bring your journals and spend time with God in His creation and receive a little rest for you soul. Or simply take a quiet walk in His presence.

The Sacred Path's entrance is near the Belle Road driveway. It is a "point-to-point" path, meaning it does not loop. It ends near the Cape Horn driveway. You may find parking in the front of the church near the carport is best. That is pretty much half way between the path entrance and the exit. There are certainly not hard-fast rules about which place to enter the path, so be creative and begin where you feel lead. There are no lights on the path so please use it from dawn to dusk.

From Your Heart to the Page

We kicked off Pages last Wednesday night with a full house! Many people are listening and responding to the nudge in their heart that is calling them to the paper. We continue with Pages every Wednesday of October, 6:30 - 8:00 PM in the Large Conference room at LWCC. There is still room so please come if you are interested in being part of a Christian community of writers.

The October theme of Developing a Writer's Life will continue into the December Pages. It's just such a big and expansive topic. Due to the holidays in December we are only meeting the first two Wednesdays that month, so it just made sense to fold those nights into the October theme.

Please bring a notebook and your favorite writing utensil to each Pages gathering.

Lemonade Story

I heard about the website God Makes Lemonade via Don Miller's facebook page. Don Jacobs is the creator of this awesome idea - sharing our "lemonade" story - when life gave us lemons and over time, God turned the sour patches of our story into a sweet lemonade. I was reading Doug Puller's blog and came across a post that he re-posted from nQuo. It's titled "To Whom It May Inspire." It's a letter from Pixar animator, Austin Madison (@munchanka on Twitter). Click on the link and read the letter in full. Austin offers advice and encouragment to all creative minds.

This is my favorite sentence from Austin's letter: "So next time you hit writer’s block, or your computer crashes and you lose an entire night’s work because you didn’t hit save (always hit save), just remember: you’re never far from that next burst of divine creativity."

Austin's words are for artists of all mediums. Our source of inspiration is as close as our breath. And He desires to breathe His divine creativity into each of us. Seek Him out. Ask for inspiratin and then wait. You will be surprised, I'm sure of it.

The Studio is ON for this Wednesday, tomorrow night. See you at 6:30 pm in LW’s coffee bar rooms E & F – which is near the kitchen.

Ramon Trevino will be sharing and giving us a demonstration of how ya do graffiti. Take notes b/c we’ll be do’n graffiti the following week (if you plan to participate in this project – we are asking for $5 to help cover the art supplies – graffiti art is not cheap!) AND if you already know you are planning on participating in that project, can you let me know as we need to make canvases. THANKS!

We’ll finish off The September Studio with Maggie Fenning’s story and urban art style, bring your sketchbooks! You won’t want to miss this.

The Studio will meet again in November with the theme of Imago Dei (which means “image of God.”) The whole month we’ll be using all kinds of art mediums to create self portraits. Okay, that’s all I’ll say as I don’t want to give too much a way… gotta keep some mystery, right?

Anyhow tomorrow night is the first night of the newly re-formatted visual arts community: The Studio. Maybe you've heard about it? :0)

Here are a few things you should know ~

» The Studio is designed for creative souls and artists who sense a longing in their heart to explore their God-given creative voice as a way to draw closer in relationship with Jesus. NOTE: The Studio is for people of all artistic abilities who desire to encounter God through creativity and the arts.

» Theme: Urban Art

» Time: 6:30 – 8:00 PM.

» Please let me know if you ARE coming to The September Studio gatherings (9/7, 9/14, 9/21 and 9/28). Our big project this month is to create a collaborative painting using graffiti spray paint and multiple wooden canvases. If you’d like to participate in this project, I definitely need to know if you are coming and in order to help off-set some of the art supply costs, we are asking those (who plan to participate) to chip in $5. You can still attend and not participate. You can just watch us try our hand at this unique art medium. I’m sure some good laughs will be had!!! :0) All in good fun.

Urban Art @ The Studio

September's theme is URBAN ART: when heaven scrapes the sidewalk

Urban Artist, Maggie Flenning will share on Wednesday, 9/7 and also give us a few of her tips on drawing and using mixed media.

Maggie's art is personal - they are snapshots of her life and her journey with Jesus. We thank her for sharing her work and her heart with us at The Studio.

Graffiti artist, Ramon Trevino will share his passion for Jesus and his gift of graffiti, legal graffiti! Ramon's work has been on display several times at LWCC ~ colorful, passionate, and meaningful, you can't leave his presence feeling inspired to dive into your God-given creativity.

On Wednesday, 9/14, Ramon will tell us his amazing testimony and how God grabbed his heart when life was at its lowest. As a new Christ follower, Ramon struggled with the gift of graffiti he has and how it can be redeemed for the One who saved him. Well, I'll let Ramon fill in the rest of the story. At The Studio on Wednesday, 9/21, we will actually get tips from Ramon and we'll be set free to work on a few canvases - collaboratively.

If you plan to participate in the graffiti project on Wednesday, 9/21, we ask that you'd chip in $5 to help cover the art supplies needed. We also ask that you'd be in PRAYER that the weather that evening will be nice. We don't really want to spray paint inside the building and have people getting high from the fumes. Yeah, that would be bad. So, pray for NICE weather, please! :0)

Lastly, bring your sketch book each night of The Studio as we'll be drawing on 9/7 and you may choose to make notes or what have you at other times.

iPhone Photography...?

Do you use your cell phone's camera much? Since I've gotten an iPhone, I have to say, I use it more than my dSLR. For one, with a 16 month old running amuck inside and out it's easy to slip it into my back pocket. I always have it with me. So I can capture just about any moment of her life on camera.

Why, would you ask, would someone passionate about photography be using their iPhone? Well, for one, the special camera apps make it FUN and very CREATIVE. Not that my dSLR isn't fun and creative, but with the iPhone, it's instant gratificaton: open up my favorite camera app, Hipstmatic, choose a "lens," a "flash" if desired, and "film" type, set composition and volia = a photo for keeps. Such as this cute shot while playing peek-a-boo the other day.

Secondly, there are some pretty cool photo editing apps offered through iTunes. I must have about 20 editing apps that I use not only with images I've taken with my iPhone, but with images I've taken with my dSLR. The editing apps are so easy to use and offer amazing effects! I don't have any fancy photo editing software on my computer and quite frankly, with my busy daughter demanding so much of me, I don't have the time to learn PhotoShop or Aperture. But I do have a few minutes to add an effect or two to an image using, say, SnapSeed, PhotoStudio, PhotoForge 2 or ArtistaOil.

This frosty table image was taken using the iPhone camera and then I did a little editing in one of the apps. I really like how it turned out. Before I edited it, the image was muddy and boring. But in a few minutes while sitting in a waiting room at my doctor's office, I turned it into something with pizzazz. The mobility of the iPhone makes editing possible just about anywhere.

The image below I took using my Hipstamatic camera app. Some of those faces may look familiar to you.

Below I took that original image and edited it in the WordPhoto app. This image was on the posters for the staff "Get To Know Us" exhibit this past June.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying this is the only way to go. It's just the only way I know. And I'm using it to its fullest capability. Maybe when life slows down a bit, I'll finally learn how to use Aperature or PhotoShop, and that is if I can afford them. Another plus with the apps - they range in cost from free to $10. But I've never paid more than $2.99 for a camera or editing app.

The image above was taken at Raystown Lake. I had just purchased the SnapSeed editing app and I was playing around with all the different effects. This crazy dreamy image is the result of my creative muse.

If you don't have an iPhone and have a Droid type phone, fear not. I bet there are neat camera and editing apps for you to purchase.

On Thursday this week I'll be camping at Lake Tahoe, CA...deep in the heart of Sierra Mountains, my home-away-from-home. And you can bet I'll have my dSLR in one hand and my iPhone in the other.

Back to Reality

Ah, vacation. A time to escape the reality of work, housekeeping, laundry, bill paying, errands, grocery shopping and beyond. A time to either slow down or speed up, depending on what your vacation entails. Our vacation to a remote, no cell reception, cottage deep in the woods on the north side of Raystown Lake was a nice combination of both paces.

While exploring the single track on the Allegrippis trail system on our mountain bikes, I stopped at a little meadow of wildflowers. The sun was warm and bright, a soft breeze gently rocked the various flowers as if in tune to a melody I could not hear. I whipped out my iPhone, got low to the ground and began getting a closer look at these seemingly worshipful colorful beauties. The friend I was with said to me, “always a photographer, huh?” I replied that there is always something to see, not just look at, but see.

Even weeds are a thing of beauty if seen through the mindset of appreciating God’s wonderful creation.These innocent, yet wild, Queen Anne’s Lace and Black-eyed Susan’s looked so pretty together, dancing in sync with one another. How could I NOT stop to capture the moment with my camera??

I’m constantly reminded that when I slow down my rushed itinerary, even my vacation itinerary, God shows me Himself in the little things. In places where I don’t expect to see Him, really. In the simplicity of a narrow trail meandering through the woods, in time enjoyed with good friends, and even in impossible weeds.

Life is so full of God and His love for us. We must take time to slow and see it. Otherwise, the sorrow and darkness that our fallen world offers can kill our hope of something better beyond the present. There is beauty in the broken.

Art Needed for Sept Kid::Life Exhibit

This is the forth year we've hosted the KidsArt exhibit at LWCC featuring the Kid::Life students K-6th grade. It's always a very popular display of young artists' take on the theme "God Created..." It's loved by all!

We are in need of art work! If you have a child(ren) in the Kid::Life ministry that will be in Kindergarten through 6th grade starting this fall, we would love to have their original artwork as it fits into the theme. The deadline to submit art is August 8th. Exhibit runs Septebmer 4 through 25.

All artwork must be accompanied with the exhibit flyer (it is being handed out in the Kid::Life classrooms on Sundays). This flyer has all the necessary info you will need to participate. If you don't have one, please contact Cass Delp or Dawn Sterner.

We are looking forward to a full exhibit in September!

New Exhibit ~ John Bergmeier

This week I have the privilege of hanging the beautifully unique mixed media and printmaking artwork of Michigan artist, John Bergmeier.

The exhibit runs Sunday, July 17 through Sunday, August 28. Please stop by The Gallery @ Common Grounds Coffee Bar at LWCC and take in his story-like artwork. I encourage you to pick up a copy of the gallery companion booklet, The Heart Behind the Art, as he describes his creative journey and passion for his work.

As you can see, I am often times inspired by God’s word and am compelled to fill in some of the blanks in the Biblical stories. I call them Biblical stories, stories that are in the Bible, but do not intend to portray them as made up fiction. It is never my wish to reinterpret God’s word, but rather to make it more real and relatable to us as contemporary Christians. I am motivated to share the Gospel message and wish to move the hearts of all Christians to boldly confess the name of Jesus. I came across a very cool website, Dear Photograph, that will stir your imagination and creativity, I’m sure of it! As I prepare to head West this week to visit my grams in the town I grew up in, I may attempt something like this. My grams has lived in the same house my whole life and I have photos of me hunting Easter eggs in her postage-stamp-sized back yard. I want to find one of those photos, take it with me, and try this creative idea while I’m there, in her back yard decades later.

Transformative Creativity

Each of us is created in the image of God, the Master Creator and Artist. Therefore, we too, have the ability to create beauty that brings Glory to Him. That is the real purpose of art.

Art is an expression of the human heart. Creating can be a form of heartfelt prayer and worship, a time where you encounter the Creator Himself and transformation in occurs in the heart of the artist.

Not only does God speak to our hearts through our own creative endeavors, He uses what we create to speak to others who encounter and interact with it.

It’s amazing, beautiful, and mysterious.

Hello writers,

I've tried hard not to cancel Pages tonight, but I'm afraid I need to. I've felt bad all day and have finally made a decision that I need to cancel. I'm so sorry for the short notice!!

I hope you get this in time. If not, what I was going to do was have everyone contemplate each "station" of the exhibit and write what comes to mind and heart. Easter is just next weekend and to reflect on Christ's passion is a powerful way to approach Good Friday.

Again, I'm sorry for the short notice...I was really trying to make it tonight, but I think I need to stay in bed.

Quiet Reflection in the Gallery

The Gallery @ Common Grounds Coffee Bar at LWCC will be open on Friday, 4/15 and Friday, 4/22 from 4pm to 9pm for a quiet reflective walk through the April Exhibit, “A Journey of Love.”

There will be copies of the gallery booklet, The Heart Behind the Art, the lighting will be set appropriately, and soft music will play in the background.

I hope this will be a quiet time for you to meet with Jesus through the use of visual art during these last few weeks of the Lenten season.

"A Journey of Love" Exhibit at LWCC

Easter is drawing close. It's the season for reflection on the Passion of Christ. The April exhibit at LWCC is titled, "A Journey of Love" featuring moments of Jesus' last couple of days on His created planet. From the Passover Meal to Resurrection, follow His journey of love... His love for you.

There is an order to viewing and experiencing this exhibit. Please pick up a copy of The Heart Behind the Art (gallery booklet) as it has more to His story than the exhibit can hold. You can also read it online. If you click here, you will see the moments of HIs life featured in this exhibit.

May this season be one of blessing as you contemplate the deep love our Savior has for you.

Musician Ryan Farish

“I take a lot of satisfaction in basically being able to say it wasn’t the music, it wasn’t me, it’s God. It’s such a huge, tremendous honor - beyond all honor - to be able to do anything that someone enjoys and be able to point to God for the glory.” ~ Ryan Farish

I’ve had Ryan’s album, “From the Sky,” for several months. It’s mostly instrumental with a few haunting female vocals in the background of a few songs. The music is uplifting and inspiring. And I just found out a few days ago, after reading this article, that he’s a devoted Christian and uses his glorious gift as a way to bring glory to the One who created him.

I am reminded of this quote by author Barbara Kingsolver, “Don’t try to figure out what other people want to hear from you; figure out what you have to say. It’s the one and only thing you have to offer.” Ryan has found that which God has bestowed to him, a unique creative voice, and he’s offering it to the world in His name.

Reflect on that quote… as an artist, what is it that you have to say? Are you saying it through your artwork? Can you consider that God gave you a voice for a purpose, for His purpose? How can it be used? What does it look like to think of your creative journey as an offering…to Him?

Hi there artists,

Spring has nearly sprung; can you feel it upon us? Grass is greening up, bulbs are pushing through the soil, and buds are forming on the tips of branches. I can not wait for spring’s full arrival!! The vivid colors that nature offers will once again flood our eyes with delight and I need that. How about you?
This Wednesday, March 16, is the monthly artists gathering; The Studio. Please join us and bring your sketchbook and colored pencils, if you have them. If not, I have PLENTY (of colored pencils, that is).

We meet at 7PM in the Coffee Bar rooms E & F of Living Word Communty Church. It’s shaping up to be an interesting evening as we will explore connecting to God through our creativity in community.

About this exhibit:

I have to say, the Global Mission’s exhibit is one of my very favorites of the entire year. Vividly colorful images fill the walls of the gallery and the cabinets house interesting artifacts and knick-knacks from far away lands.

In March of 2009 we did something different in the gallery booklet, The Heart Behind the Art, we took a cue from Acts 14:27-28, “On arrival, they got the church together and reported on their trip, telling in detail how God had used them to throw the door of faith wide open so people of all nations could come streaming in” (The Message). Each page of The Heart Behind the Art was packed with wonderful stories from our church family who have traveled on short-term mission trips. It was one way to live into the Acts passage.

Well, we are doing it again this year. In this edition, we have thirty-six pages of stories from people willing to share their experiences of God and His people. You’ll find stories of faith, trust, gratitude, and life-changing occurrences. I know you will be moved by their words and images as you read through this booklet, “Silhouette of Grace,” a special edition of The Heart Behind the Art.

If you have a story to share for next year’s booklet, please contact me. I’d love to include your experience in the 2012 Global Mission Focus exhibit.

I just read an interesting interview on The Poached Egg website. It’s with Bono of U2 and the title is Grace Over Karma. It’s worth the read, whether or not you are a fan of U2. Bono’s view on religion is refreshing and the way he sees Jesus as The Messiah is simple and quite lovely. I hope you take the time to read over the interview.

Sugarloaf Crafts Festival

Lovers of fine crafts and art will find more than 250 top artisans displaying and selling their unique creations in pottery, sculpture, glass, jewelry, fashion, home décor, furniture and home accessories, items for the garden, and photography. In addition to top national artists, the Festival will also introduce new and emerging artists showcasing the latest trends in handmade fashion and accessories, statement jewelry and fine art.

The Sugarloaf Crafts Festival in Timonium also features interactive demonstrations with master craftspeople. Many of the talented artists at the show will introduce visitors to how they create their art; demonstrations include wheel thrown pottery, wood turning and metal spinning. You won’t want to miss our new ironforging demonstration by Nick Vincent.

Your Work Matters to God: explore vocation, calling & career

This year, Living Word’s Leadership Summit will have a creative focus, literally. Dr. Steve Garber is the keynote speaker and he works with many artists in helping them discern what it means to develop and practice their “craft” from a biblical worldview. One of the workshops that he’ll be offering is titled: The World of Creative Arts.

I’d like to encourage you to make way in your calendar to attend The Summit on February 5, 2011. Click the links for more information and to register online. It’s only $15 per person or $20 for a married couple.

God has gifted the artists with special creative talents.As Christians, we know our gift is from Him and we desire to live fully into them. But what does that really look like? How does one go about doing that? How can we lift up God as we create art? I really hope you can attend this event!

Why Do You Write?

Tonight's PAGES gathering was a small one. But I expected that with the sudden change to Wednesday night and last night's snowfall making some challenging driving this evening. But, God showed up tonight in a powerful way...

We started off by reflecting on the John O'Donohue poem, "For A New Beginning." Since we are only twelve days into a new year, I thought it was appropriate. What would it look like to dive into the next twelve months and explore, further develop the gift of writing that God has given you?

I asked the question, "Why do you write?" So, we took some time and actually wrote out why we write. This was actually a very telling exercise for each of us. It became clear that I write to know. To know God. To know myself. And with so much busyness this past year, I've not taken the time to write as I once had. Because of this lack of writing in my life, I've lost time getting to know God. I've lost time getting to know myself. My soul feels it too. I must get back to writing regularly = daily. (In a future post, I'll share what I wrote and what I discovered through this exercise.)

Around Christmastime we had some intensely cold weather with driving winds. Our pipes froze. Once my husband thawed them out, he said we need to let the water drip out of the faucet so that there is activity in the pipes. This will keep them from freezing. Well, writing daily, is like the dripping faucet...it keeps the flow going and it's less likely we'll "freeze up." Needless to say, my writing pipes have been frozen shut for several months now. I feel a thaw coming on and tonight's PAGES is a big part of that.

In 2010 it's safe to say that I squandered some of the talents God has given me. Like the parable, I've taken the talents and buried them for "safe keeping." Yeah, right. I buried them because I'm lazy, because I've let life distract me from using and developing that which God has graciously given to me. In 2011, I commit to multiplying the talents given to me. One way to do this is by writing daily and I'm committing to 30 minutes each evening.

So, why do you write? Take some time and write why you write. Like me, like Ryan, maybe you'll discover something significant and be filled with gratitude for the One who gives gifts so freely and generoulsy.

Being Made

One night when I couldn’t sleep, my mind wandered in prayer to the upcoming gallery exhibits. That’s when this crazy idea came to me—a whole exhibit featuring unfinished works of art, everything in a process of being made, just like us. We are all unfinished works of God’s creativity—being made into His image with every breath we take.

It’s easy to see that some of these pieces are not finished. For a few others, it’s harder to tell. But to the artist who created the piece, it’s clear to him/her that they are not yet done. In church, we may see someone and think “wow, they have it all together,” but the fact is, they are still a work in progress, just like you and just like me. This side of heaven, we are unfinished, undone, and being made. Messy and mysterious, yet in His hands, we are being crafted into the person He longs for us to be...if we aren’t resistant to His work in our lives.

As you look upon this unique exhibit, may you sense God’s creative handiwork in your life and embrace it as He completes the work He’s doing in you. Like the artwork hanging in this exhibit, you too, are being made.

Let me start off by saying I'm praying 2011 will be easier on me, health-wise. Geez. I'm battling a ridiculous cold virus that has left me totally wiped out. I worked today and just can't muster up the energy to stay until 9pm tonight. Please accept my apologies. I feel like a flake. And a crumb at the same time.

I'd rather not give you what I have, just in time for the holidays to get into full swing.

Special Night at The Studio

Our monthly artists gathering this month, The Studio, will be a special one. Not because it comes just 10 days before Christmas but because the current showing artist in The Gallery @ Common Grounds, Matthew J. Carpenter, will be here and will share his love of photography.

Matthew is a graduate of Messiah College, majoring in Adventure Education. While at Messiah, he took several photography classes and fell in love with the artform. He has much experience in the dark room and using a variety of cameras and films. To read more about him, click here.

The Studio is Wednesday, December 15 at 7:00pm in The Gallery @ Common Grounds, Living Word Community Church. We hope you come to hear Matthew's story, view his outstanding photography, hang out with other artists, and drink an unlimited supply of Seattle's Best coffee and feast on festive holiday sweets, just in case you didn't get enough at Thanksgiving. I'm sorry to do this, but I'm realizing my energy levels are not 100% back yet post-op. This week I change the gallery over and it's a nice big exhibit. Therefore, I think I need to cancel The Studio tomorrow night (Wednesday) and use that time & remaining energy working on the gallery.

HOWEVER, you can still pick up your artwork from the current exhibit. I'll be working from 5-9pm tomorrow night. You can find me in the gallery OR in my office. If the office area is locked, text me or call me: 542-9024 and I'll let ya in to get your work. :0)

Thanks for understanding and we'll meet again for The Studio in December and do something fun for Christmas. And if your creative mind has any ideas about what that could be - send 'em my way. I love collaborative efforts!

Cancer-free Reflections

I've been reflecting on the past month's health chaos and asking God to show me how to move forward in light of the cancer-free diagnosis...where do I need to make changes and begin living a fuller life. A more loving life. A more creative life. A life more aware of His presence.

Faced with even a THREAT of cancer can change your perspective. What a gift this past month has been...

I can't describe the gratitude I have for all the prayer lifted up to God on my behalf. The pathology report declared no lymphoma or other cancers. However, I have been diagnosed with the infammatory disease - sarcoidosis. I'll continue to trust that His will be done in my life and through my life.

God is so good.
